Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I bring a cell phone to school?

   For safety purposes, the district permits students to possess telecommunications devices, including mobile telephones; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes.

   The use of mobile telephones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event.

   A student who uses a telecommunications device during the school day shall have the device confiscated. The parent may pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal's office. Confiscated telecommunications devices that are not retrieved by the student or student's parents will be disposed of after the notice required by law [See policy FNCE in the Allen ISD Student Handbook]. The District will not be responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen telecommunications devices. 

2) Can I bring other electronic devices to school?

   Under limited circumstances, students may be permitted to possess or use personal electronic devices. Without previous permission, teachers may collect the items and turn them in to the principal's office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items.

   Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The District will not be responsible for any damaged, lost, stolen electronic devices.

   In some cases, students may find it beneficial or might be encouraged to use personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices for instructional purposes while on campus. Students must obtain prior approval before using personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices for instructional use. Students must also sign a user agreement that contains applicable rules for use. Violations of the user agreement may result in withdrawal of privileges and other disciplinary action. 

3) What if I don't complete my homework on time for a class?

   If your assignment is not complete at the time it is due, you may be given a ZAP (Zeroes Are Not Permitted) detention for that afternoon at 3:35pm. A ZAP will require you to stay after school from 3:35pm - 4:25pm regardless of when you complete the assignment. A ZAP takes precedence over all school activities.

    Students will call home and leave a message with a parent to let them know they will be staying after school that day for a ZAP detention. Parents will also be contacted by the principal for students who do not show up for a ZAP detention. 

4) How can I improve a low grade on a quiz or test?

   In the following Senate Bill 2033, students will be allowed a reasonable opportunity to re-do any work that is below passing. Please continue to communicate with teachers regarding tutoring times and re-teaching opportunities. Students who fail a paper or quiz are given up to 5 days to make an appointment with their teacher to be tutored or re-taught the information. The student will them be able to re-do the assignment for a maximum grade of 70% to replace the old grade. This does not apply to final exams or semester exams. 

5) Can I still eat from one of the lunch lines if I forget to bring money for my lunch account?

   Yes, you can still eat lunch. You can charge one lunch at either "The Great Plate" or the "Cougar Grille" lunch line. If you forget your money again, you can have milk and three side dishes from "The Great Plate" line. 

6) What do I do when I'm absent?

   On the day you are absent, students' parent should call the attendance clerk in the school office. When the student returns to school, a written note, signed by a parent that describes the reason for absence and the date(s) of the absence must be turned in to the office. A note has to be received within 3 school days to be considered excused. Emails will not be accepted. Faxed notes may be accepted if they contain all required information including the parent signature. Please note that, unless the absence is for a statutorily allowed reason under compulsory attendance laws, the district is not required to excuse any absence. 

7) How do I know if I'm in violation of the school dress code?

   If a student fails to comply with the dress code, the campus administrator will request that the student make the appropriate corrections. This may include changing into clothing provided by the school. If the student refuses to make the appropriate corrections, the student's parent/guardian will be contacted for assistance in making the necessary corrections. If both the student and parent/guardian refuse, the student will be assigned an in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until the problem is corrected. Repeated violations of the dress code will result in more serious disciplinary action. In all cases, appropriate disciplinary action will be administered in compliance with the Student Code of Conduct. Teachers and administrators have the authority to enforce the dress code. When subjective in nature, the principal's ruling stands.
