Born in Waco on June 14, 1949, Mrs. Lowery attended Richfield High School in Waco. Upon her graduation in 1967, she earned degrees from the University of Texas-Austin and the University of North Texas. She married Herchel Lowery in 1970 and the couple raised three children: Amy, Brennan, and Kemp.

She joined the Allen High School counseling staff in 1989 and transferred to the new Curtis Middle School in 1994 when the ninth grade was moved to both Ford Middle School and Curtis. The schools would serve three grades until the new Allen High School opened in August 1999. The old high school was then converted into a separate ninth-grade school.

Mrs. Lowery was fatally injured in a July 24, 1997, automobile accident. The following year the Board of Trustees voted to name the new ninth-grade school in her honor.

At the school's original dedication, then-Board President Worley Stein said that “Becky Lowery’s role as a counselor, friend and mother touched the lives of hundreds of teenagers. She helped many Allen students navigate through the challenging junior high school years.”

As plans were made for a new freshman center, the decision on what to name the school was never in doubt, according to John Montgomery, the Board of Trustees president at the time.  “The transition from middle school to high school is still a big one and we feel that the memory of Becky Lowery sends a caring and positive message to the staff and students.”

Construction on the new Lowery Freshman Center began in January 2017 and was completed in August 2019.
