In 2012, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved revisions for the mathematics standards.  These standards are to be fully implemented for K-8 in the 2014-2015 school year.  The new TEKS will affect all grade levels.  At every grade level, current TEKS have been shifted down to lower grades and newly written TEKS were added. 

What are the TEKS?

The TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) are state standards for what learners, at each grade level, should know and be able to do.  The STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) tests learners on this knowledge. 

What is Allen ISD doing to prepare for the implementation of the new Math standards?

During the Summer 2012, educators, along with the curriculum coordinator started the curriculum writing process for Kindergarten and First Grade.

In the 2012-2013 school year:

• Kindergarten and 1st grade educators started teaching the NEW Kindergarten and 1st Grade Math TEKS.

• Educators and curriculum coordinator started the curriculum writing process for 2nd – 8th grade.

• Educators taught “gap filling” New TEKS in grades 2 – 8 so learners do not have any gaps starting in the 2014-2015 school year.

 In the 2013-2014 school year:

• Kindergarten and 1st grade educators continued to teach the NEW Kindergarten and 1st grade Math TEKS.

• 2nd grade educators started teaching the NEW 2nd grade Math TEKS. 

• 6th grade educators started teaching the NEW 6th grade Math TEKS, as well as the current Math TEKS

• Educators taught “gap filling” new TEKS in grades 3-8 so learners do not have any gaps starting in the 2014-2015 school year.

In the 2014-2015 school year:

• The NEW Math TEKS, K-8 will be implemented completely. 

• The Spring 2015 STAAR test will test the NEW Math TEKS.
